Going Camping Folks! Meet, Learn and Share
ProductCamp is real for Atlanta thanks for a bunch of good folks, I had the opportunity to pin down Jason Brett the other day and it should be a good time. Looks like I may have made the cut on a presentation on Roadmaps, which is focusing on creating accountability for Product Managers, as if we didn’t already have enough. I should have a post on that soon, but if you want to learn more Pragmatic Marketing as a great session via video on demand. I took it a couple of weeks ago now and if you want you can get $100 with this code: S06RM09. I think the code is only good until like June 10 or so.
Back to ProductCamp Atlanta, this is yet another event which is showing the interest of getting together, sharing ideas and learning from ideas. This ain’t no meet up – it’s a participation event. As an unconference the attendees drive the sessions, so death by powerpoint is highly unlikely. Events are just growing due to the interest and demand. With eFactor’s event tonight, the growth in Social Media Club Atlanta, Mountain Social Media Summit and two large Tweetup groups, there is no shortage of things to do around sharing best practices around technology and marketing.
Many thanks to Jason for providing time and insight on ProductCamp Atlanta. If you don’t know jason, make sure you meet him next week at ProductCamp. Jason is an active product management advocate, community leader and just plain old cool cat who blogs @ jasonbrett.me
Who founded this?
The first P-Camp was held in Silicon Valley in March of 2008 as an “Agile Unconference for Product Managers and other product champions.” Then, in June 2008, Paul Young (http://www.productbeautiful.com) founded and organized the first ProductCamp as we know it today, defining ProductCamp as a “user-driven, collaborative unconference on topics related to Product Marketing and Management.” Paul has been instrumental in the spread of ProductCamp events around North America.
What are y’alls goals?
The goals of ProductCamp Atlanta are:
- To Raise the profile of the Product Management, Marketing, Development and Strategy disciplines in Atlanta
- To introduce a cross-industry forum for participants to learn about and collaboratively explore methods, trends and topics in product management, marketing and strategy.
- To help product managers and marketers increase their influence and effectiveness in their own organizations.
What topics do you expect to be central to the unconference?
There seem to be a few emerging themes in early discussions among attendees that are garnering a lot of attention. One of the big themes seems to be centered around really improving understanding of the customer. I see a lot of sessions around gathering feedback, listening to customers and customer-centric development. This is an important topic throughout the entire product ecosystem. Another big area of interest seems to be around improving the effectiveness of product organizations, from ideation to launch and beyond. And finally, given Atlanta’s active startup community, we have a strong interest in building a formal product organization from the ground up.
Who is leading sessions and where are they from?
We already have sessions coming from a variety of leaders in companies from around Atlanta and the nation, including leaders at ChoicePoint/Lexis Nexus, AutoTrader.com, McKesson/Relay Health, ZigZag Marketing, Pragmatic Marketing, Ceridian, Masten Space Systems, Stonebranch and many more. I even heard a rumor that you will be offering up a session.
Looks like a bunch of local expertise, if the attendees could walk away with 1 thing what would that be?
I’d like attendees to walk away with the realization that the very challenges they face in their day to day careers are being addressed by local peers every day. By stepping outside of the company walls and taking a little time to share experiences and knowledge, each attendee should go back to the office on Monday with new perspectives and new skills that will help move their own products–and careers–ahead in the marketplace.
